What is social and emotional learning?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

WHO ARE WE?
The students in Class 5-206 realize that each one of us has some amazing qualities to share with our classmates and the world. We also understand that getting to know one another is important because it allows us to better understand one another and create a classroom in which we support each other and work cooperatively.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY
In our Communication Unit in Sanford Harmony we are working to increase our awareness of Communication Bloopers, ineffective communication behaviors, and practicing Communication Boosters, effective and healthy communication strategies. When we become aware of Communication Bloopers, we are able to catch ourselves when we bloop and replace them with a boost from a more effective communication strategy. Since communication is key to our collaboration, we practice this work together in our partnerships and teams!

Meta-Moment
In the story, Beatrice takes a Meta-Moment to help handle her feelings when things go awry. We explored the steps of the Meta-Moment to help us handle unpleasant feelings in a helpful way. We then created a comic strip depicting a character we created and showed how that character could use the Meta-Moment when faced with something that triggers unpleasant emotions.
