Multicultural Fair
Just as Class 5-206 has its own culture, everyone has a culture too! The Multicultural Fair at P.S. 221 Q allows us to celebrate all of the different cultures that contribute to our unique school culture.
Our class collaborated to understand the concept of culture and describe our own individual culture. We identified similarities in all cultures and recognized that differences allow us to learn new things, consider new perspectives, and value different experiences.

Respect for ALL Week
During Respect for All Week, Class 5-206 worked to gain a better understanding of the diversity. We kicked off the week by depicting what “respect for all” means through words, pictures, scenarios, and symbols and exploring the word “all.”
We explored the word INCLUDED and the feelings associated with being included. How can you give that feeling to someone else?
Black History Month
Black History Month is a celebration of the many achievements by African Americans in United States history. Class 5-206 celebrated by learning about important and influential African Americans by reading biographies. We embarked on a “fact hunt” to answer questions about 25 extraordinary Americans and record our answers on a calendar fact card.
02 - 02 - 2020
February 2, 2020 was the Super Bowl! It was also Groundhog Day. But neither one of those is the real reason this date is famous.
This date was a palindrome. Palindromes are words that are spelled exactly the same the same way, forward and backwards. Phrases and sentences can be palindromes, too.
How many palindromes do you know? When will the next palindrome date happen?

Dear Basketball
Current events are important and necessary to address. But tragedy can be difficult to discuss. So instead we honored someone we looked up to by analyzing Kobe’s poem ‘Dear Basketball’ and watching his Academy Award winning animated short of the same name.
Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Ninety-one years after his birth and 56 years after his historic “I Have a Dream” speech, Martin Luther King Jr.’s stirring words remain as inspiring today as they were when he lived.
We honored Dr. King’s lasting legacy by reading some of his most moving quotes - some we had already heard and some we had not—but all of them are worth repeating and contemplating on this holiday of remembrance, service and equality.
What will you do to live out Dr. King’s vision of unity?

NEW YEAR…SAME YOU…ONLY BETTER!
How can we set academic, social, and personal goals for the new year?
What will we do to achieve these goals?
The 5th grade students are taking ownership of their academic, social, and personal goals in the new year. Using a growth mindset, we worked to set meaningful, appropriate, and challenging goals. We then created a workable plan to achieve our goals. We know that achieving goals takes work and we are committed to putting our plans to work.

Let’s Buddy UP
After completing our Month of Kindness, we reflected upon the act of kindness that was most meaningful to us. We discussed why completing this act held a special place in our hearts.
Was it because of its impact on someone else? Was it because of what we received in return? Was it because something so simple for us made someone else feel so good?
